Solar Water Pumping

Solar power can be used for water pumping without the need for batteries and solar charge controllers, requiring only PV panels and a controller or pump inverter. This makes solar a cost-effective option for water pumping purposes.

Types of Solar Pumps

There are two main two types of solar pumps: (1) centrifugal pumps and (2) pumps with screw-type impellers. Centrifugal pumps are more suitable for high-flow, low-head application while screw type pumps are more suitable for low-flow, high-head applications.

Types of Electric Motors

The two main types of pump electric motors are AC induction motors and brushless DC motors (BLDC). AC-induction motors require a solar pump inverter, which varies the speed of the motor to match the available solar energy. BLDC motors on the other hand use an electronic controller to create a rotating magnetic field in the stator which produces torque to drive the permanent magnet rotor.

Advantages of using AC pumps with a solar inverter are:

AC pump motors are more readily available than DC pump motors.
AC pump motors cover a larger range of sizes compared to DC pump motors.
AC pump motors are usually cheaper than DC pump motors.

Sunray supplies both types of pumps and motors as well as AC pump inverters.

Sizing of Submersible Pumps

When sizing a solar pump, the following information is required

H1 = Depth below ground of water levelH2 = Height of tank stand base above borehole outletH3 = Height of tank standH4 = Height of water inlet above base of tankHs = Depth to water pump outletHy = Total static head = H1 + H2 + H3 + HaLe = Total pipe length from pump outlet to outlet in tankDi = Pipe inside diameter

When sizing a solar pump system, the major parameters which should be specified are: HT, Di and Sp together with the following:
QT = required daily delivery (L/day)SH = average daily sun-hours (typically between 4 and 5 hours for sub-Saharan Africa)N = number of pipe fittings such as elbows, etc.Ƞh = pump hydraulic efficiency (typically between 40% & 60%)
